As our lead story yesterday highlights, law firms are - perhaps somewhat belatedly - waking up to the power of technology. But while they may be making investments, they are still a long way from embracing how technology could fundamentally change the profession.
In an interview with Legal Week last week, Richard Susskind argues that while lawyers are not about to be replaced by machines just yet, most City firms have not even got as far as the fear stage in terms of realising how much their roles could shift in the future. What firms do seem to be getting to grips with is tackling their tricky German presences - with Freshfields to consolidate its German presence with the closure of either Duesseldorf or Cologne and White & Case set to pull the plug on its Munich office as firms continue to take a more pragmatic approach to their international networks.
Elsewhere, other stories over the last week include Paul Hastings' hire of Linklaters' restructuring heavyweight David Ereira as part of its plans to ramp up its City offering, meanwhile we announced the shortlist for the coveted best client partner award. Eight partners from firms including Ashurst, Herbert Smith Freehills, Clifford Chance and DLA Piper are in the running for the award, which will be presented at the British Legal Awards this Wednesday.
