In the absence of a transformative transatlantic merger, cracking the US market remains a challenge for virtually all leading UK firms. As Allen & Overy senior partner David Morley admitted this week, the magic circle firm is not as credible Stateside as it wishes to be, with its US strategy likely to be a key challenge for his successor.
Meanwhile, as UK managing partner Duncan Weston takes on a more global role in the business, he argues the firm is in no way 'starting from scratch' as it looks to tackle the world's biggest legal market.
Turning to the more junior end of the profession, a damning report issued this week calls law firms to task for failing to adequately help disadvantaged students following work experience placement scheme PRIME. Some students had in fact been dissuaded from becoming lawyers after their placements.
