Few things in life attract people's attention as much as money and last week was no exception.
Clifford Chance followed the lead of magic circle rivals Linklaters and Allen & Overy by rolling in base pay and bonuses for junior lawyers to create a package that, while on the face of it is only £1,000 more than the maximum available last year, guarantees virtually all of its NQ lawyers a salary of £85,000.
The firm also joined Slaughter and May in introducing a new remote working policy that, in theory, should make it easier for lawyers to improve their work/life balance – if only a little.
Kirkland & Ellis on the other hand was feeling less generous, asking for money back from one of its departing partners. The Chicago firm refused to allow Hong Kong corporate partner Frank Sun to leave for US rival Latham & Watkins until he repaid in full a $120,000 bonus he received in 2014.
Elsewhere, Allen & Overy's new leadership duo have set their sights on growth in the US, as well as trying to stay ahead of the competition by investing in improving innovation and diversity.
Innovation was also the theme of the day at Legal Week, with Cooley, Dentons and Pinsent Masons among the big winners at the recent Legal Week Innovation Awards.
Other highlights last week include a video interview with late Slaughter and May corporate partner Frances Murphy filmed by the First 100 Years project, which charts the progress of women in law, in which Murphy discusses everything from her motivation for becoming a lawyer to her love of deals. Murphy died last month after a long illness.
