Blood, guts, new management and lots of money - the best of Legal Week last week

Legal Week's most popular stories over the last week

If ever there was a quote to put pressure at work into context, this would be it: "When people around me at the law firm are stressed out and running down the corridor, I'm thinking, 'what's the matter? Nobody died, no one is haemorrhaging in front of you'."

The Hogan Lovells senior associate in question not only works full time in the firm's patents practice, but also holds down a weekend job as a GP. She is one of a band of latecomers to law profiled in our feature this week who all had careers elsewhere before training as lawyers. Not all coming from white collar backgrounds, they are certainly achievers.

Elsewhere, with some law firms accused of trading on their reputation and overcharging, general counsel certainly don't pull any punches when rating their advisers in our latest Best Legal Adviser report.

Meanwhile, as Ashurst managing partner James Collis annouced he was stepping down, the first contenders for his role have started to emerge.

And with LLP accounts season in full swing, we learnt quite how much Freshfields' top earner - who saw a 70% pay hike - took home in 2014-15. It was also a good year for Clydes' big billers, while over at Hogan Lovells there was a dramatic change in the volume of cash in the business as offices outside the US struggled to turn a profit.
