Survey examines coming out of the closet at work, its possible role in career advancement for LGBT employees |
Career question for lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered (LGBT) employees: Announce your orientation or keep mum? The July/August issue of the Harvard Business Review says, "Announce." Here is the scoop from the article, "For LGBT Workers, Being 'Out' Brings Advantages." The authors write that surveys demonstrate that 48 percent of LGBT employees remain "closeted" at work, thinking of it as a "hindrance" on the job. They advise a re-thinking. Why? Social interaction with co-workers and supervisors is crucial to career advancement. It cements workplace bonds. Coming out helps these important bonds grow and develop. They write: "Some 42% of closeted employees said they felt isolated at work, versus only 24% of openly LGBT employees." The import is this: "These factors may explain why 52% of all closeted employees, but just 36% of out employees, believe their careers have stalled." The piece also notes that closeted employees use their precious energy at work to conceal their orientation, resulting in less energy for actual work. Isn't that the truth? Pressing down who we are — and sexual orientation is one key in making us human — drains our minds and our souls. The law is designed to treat us as individuals, not stereotypes. |
