New York appellate court Justice Samuel L. Green, who rode a segregated train from Alabama to the legal history books, heard his last cases Wednesday in a courtroom packed with admirers. Colleagues describe the retiring justice as a fair and gracious leader who has left a "lasting imprint" on the court.
 
Herbert Smith to Reopen in New York Top
A leaked internal memo has revealed that top U.K. firm Herbert Smith plans within the next 12 months to reopen its New York office, which will focus on dispute resolution, including international arbitration and investigations. The memo also outlined plans to establish outposts in Francophone Africa, Korea and Germany.
 
Marcellus Shale Attracts Another Houston Firm to Pennsylvania Top
Houston-based energy law firm Sadler Law has become the latest Texas firm to set up shop on the front lines of Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale. Sadler's managing partner says he expects the office, which currently has 10 lawyers, to grow to 30 or 40 lawyers by the end of 2012.
 
Greenberg Traurig to Open in Tel Aviv Top
In a move that appears to make it the first major U.S. law firm with an on-the-ground presence in Israel, Greenberg Traurig has announced it will open an office in Tel Aviv next month. The office will initially be staffed by current partners who will not permanently relocate; up to five lawyers will be hired later to staff the office full time.
 
Kilpatrick Boosts Middle East Practice With Saudi Alliance Top
Kilpatrick Townsend has bolstered its Middle East presence by entering into an exclusive alliance with Saudi Arabia's Hani Qurashi Law Firm. Kilpatrick Chair Bill Dorris said the move is the firm's "next step" in expanding its practice in the region, adding that the firm was drawn to an alliance by growth in the Saudi construction and engineering industries.
