Litigator of the Week: Grant Harvey of Gibbs & Bruns Top
Harvey led the team that won what appears to be a $116 million fraud verdict for a V&E partner who alleged an old friend, Dallas billionaire Trevor Rees-Jones, cheated him when he bought out Noel's stake in a company he subsequently sold for billions. The twist is that another of Rees-Jones's investors brought an almost identical suit--and lost on summary judgment.
 
Three Firms Take On More Howrey Partners Top
Morgan Lewis adds two Howrey partners, almost two months after hiring the former head of Howrey's Chicago office. Greenberg Traurig takes on two partners, also in Chicago. And Arnold & Porter adds one more Howrey partner to the 13-lawyer IP litigation team it hired earlier this month.
 
Winston Opens Houston Office With 40 Howrey Lawyers Top
The Chicago River ran kelly green in honor of St. Patrick's Day on Thursday, but Winston & Strawn managing partner Thomas Fitzgerald, a graduate of Notre Dame's law school, didn't have time to see it. He was busy finalizing the details of adding more than 40 former Howrey lawyers to the firm's new Houston office.
 
The Am Law 100: Southern California Firms Had Mixed Results in 2010 Top
Last year was a mixed bag for Southern California-based Am Law 200 firms. While some turned in strong financial performances, others suffered declines in gross revenue that suggest an industry still facing challenges--at least in one part of the country.
 
Three Firms Take Lead on Qatar's Stake in Spain's Iberdrola Top
Allen & Overy, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, and leading Spanish firm Uría Menéndez are advising on state-backed Qatar Holdings's acquisition of a 6.2 percent stake in Spanish power company Iberdrola for $2.82 billion.
