Appellate Lawyer of the Week: Invoking Arbitration Top
Any appellate win is important to the client. But one Corpus Christi lawyer's Texas Supreme Court victory also is a relief to his small firm: His law partner won't have to go to trial this week in Corpus Christi in a contract dispute they believe should be in arbitration. The high court's April 1 per curiam opinion involves disputes over arbitration clauses, one of the most commonly litigated aspects of residential housing contracts.
 
Dealmaker of the Week: Deja Vu Top
The pending merger-of-equals of Houston's Frontier Oil Corp. and Holly Corp. of Dallas has a deja vu aspect for the lawyer who leads Frontier's deal team. His working relationship with Frontier dates back to his time as a summer associate with Andrews Kurth, and he has long-term knowledge of the company. He says Frontier, formerly known as Wainoco Oil, was one of his first clients, and he has done work for the company for 30 years.
 
Discipline Report: Lawyer Disbarred, Another Resigns Top
A McLennan County lawyer has been disbarred, and another lawyer has resigned in lieu of discipline, the State Bar of Texas reported recently. In the case of the McLennan County lawyer, the State Bar cited alleged violation of disciplinary rules requiring a lawyer to hold funds belonging to clients or third persons separate from the lawyer's own property. The judgment also cited the rule requiring a lawyer to keep a client informed about the status of a matter and to comply with requests for information.
