Jefferson had just sold his library to Congress, to replace the one destroyed by the British with the burning of Washington, D.C. the year before. As the last wagonload of books left Monticello, Jefferson remarked with pride in a letter to confidant Samuel Harrison Smith, "[A]n interesting treasure is added to your city, now become the depository of unquestionably the choicest collection of books in the US. and I hope it will not be without some general effect on the literature of our country." 2015 marks the 200th anniversary of the sale of Thomas Jefferson's library, which became the foundation of the vast Library of Congress we know today. Join Monticello librarian and historian Endrina Tay, in conversation with Library of Congress history specialist Jurretta Heckscher, as they explore the history of the sale, shedding light on the lesser known facts behind this fascinating story.
